Hi,
I started this project over 2 years ago and am getting close to being finished but still a lot to do.
I started with building my version of the rotisserie. It was made from 2" 11 gauge box steel. The gears are from a ww1 navy metal lathe. I will be making post as often as possible and will try to answer any questions you may have.
Thanks for looking.

I lifted the body off using these holes in the body and it worked well.
I have a trolly system in my shop to move stuff around. I live in a rural area and don't have much help moving things. I lifted the body off of the new frame several times during the build, it was nice to just do it and not have to wait for help. .
I don't think I could have done this job with out the rotisserie. I am too old to be crawling around on the ground.
Replacing a little metal and I guess dirt dobbers like TR's too. I cut out the old metal and welded in some new.
There is no shortage of rust on these old cars you just have to deal with it and cut back the bad metal and weld in new.

I am welding the seam on the rear fender and this is part of it.
Took the rotisserie off to do a little work on the rust around the lic. lights.
I am building a complete frame and this the platform I intend to build it on. I squared it and leveled it and bolted it to the floor with anchors in the concrete. You can see the motor and trans. in the back ground. It is a 4.8L lsx out of a 07 chevy truck that a tree fell on it. It has 23k miles and its drive by wire with a 4l60e trans.
Welded plate where the wheels go.
Started to mock up the front end. The front edn is a mustang II after market from speedway with a generic cross member. I bought the generic cross member because I new I would have to cut it no mater witch one I bought.
Set the body back on to check clearance with the wheels. The wheels came off of a mustang. Got them on craig's list. They are 245/45 R17.
Had to trim a little metal but very little. The after market Mustang II after market are really good front end that are reasonable to purchase, repair and handle very good.
Once the overall with was figured I cut the excess out of the cross member about 5 inches. Put the pieces I cut off on the inside and welded them in through 1/2" holes in the member then I butt welded it up.(http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj570/philipcrawford/Old%20Basil%20upgrades/P1030389_zps157bb0c3.jpg)
Once the cross member was welded and aligned on the platform just the was it sits at ride height it was welded to the platform.
Starting to look like a front end with a motor.
Laying out the frame rails. They taper towards the front. They are 2" x 3" 11 gauge about 1/8" thick and they are very strong.
Making these compound cuts took a lot of grinding and fitting but came out well.
Just another view.
Had to narrow the rack the same amount as the cross member. The alluminum ends are pressed on the tube and are not real hard to remove but the area where they sit is a smaller diameter than the rest of the tube. Also had to shorten the rack shaft and rethread the ends. My lathe is the same age as I and like me it doesn't look real good but it still works ok most of the time.
Put the body back on and making body mounts.
Extending frame forward and looking steering. The steering was a night mare.
Cutting some rusty metal out and getting to make the hole a little bigger.
Had to kick the frame up and reduced it is size to 2x2".
Making sure everything fits.
Upper body mount and upper four link mount.
You can see the upper four link mount. I drilled a 3/4" hole then took a piece of 3/4" bar and drilled a 1/2" hole in it on the lathe. Slipped it in the hole and welded it in place. Makes a strong mount that won't collapse when tightened..
This is the removable trans. mount done the same way as the four link through bolt.
Thankyou for this detail. It needs a lot of knowledge and tenacity.
Over here in the wet, I'd be thinking about painting the frame with POR15, and coating it internally with wax. Likewise the shell.
Perhaps not an issue for you. Hard to imagine living where it never rains. As I write, the water is dripping into the sump of our drainage system in the basement of our 400 yo cottage...
Ivor
Awesome work Phil. Looking forward to watching your progress!
Hi Ivor,
I live in south louisiana and know all about rain and heat. I spent 2 years in Banbury I think it is in Oxffordshire many years ago and know about your weather. I am past the painting stage but thinking about foam filling the frame but don't know much about it. The car is painted and I am wiring as we speak but I have a lot more photo's and post to come.
Thanks for looking
Phil
Rob,
Thanks for looking. Just finished gluing veneer on the dash have to take some photo's.
Phil
Going to be a very sweet ride! Nice work!
Phil welcome to British V8! I have seen all this stuff on the Six-Pack forum and it is so good that It is worth a second viewing! Phil I like your shop, you definitely have the space and right tools to get the job done.
Cheers
Byron
I live not too far from you. I know there is a V6 mgb in sela I see sometimes, and my V6 alpine, Glad to see another one in these parts.
Don
It has been a growing experience and have learned a lot. I believe my wife will be happy when I finish.
Thanks for looking
Phil
Byron,
Good to hear from you and how is your car comming. You must be close to finishing. I have been wanting to post on this site but just haven't had the time but finally decided to just do it. How is the weather? I wore short pants in the shop with the doors open.
Good to hear from you.
Phil
Robbie,
Thanks for looking and where do you live?
Phil

Started making the motor mounts.
Before the body was lifted off of the old frame I cut a piece of wood that would fit the shape of the underside of the hood along with a lot of dimensions which allowed me to make a pattern and weld it to the spring support. I knew everything had to be under the piece of steel.
This saved lots of time and second guessing what will fit. The motor could have gone lower but the oil pan would have been hanging below the frame.
Left side motor mounts. A lot of welding and grinding.
When ever I but welded I always weld a gusset on both sides of the but weld. I am not the best welder in the world so better safe than sorry or worse dead.
Welding the body mounts to the frame. I had tacked them when the body was last on the car. I made them out of 1/8" flat bar.
Looking at the steering and where to run it. I did it 3 separate times with the lost one after the body was on and everything bolted down. What a night mare.
More steering. The ear with the hole was removed and relocated. Had to cut the ear off of the motor to make the steering work. Had to go between the 1 and3 cylinder header. Tight fit.
This steering mount didn't work either.
I am installing a 9" ford diff. and this is the third member out of it. Getting ready to narrow the axel.
I narrowed the axel about 6". Cut the old bearing end off cleaned it up on the lathe and welded it back on the tube. There is a bit more to it than that but that is another story.
Test fitted the brakes. They are supposed to bolt right on but ended up welding them because of clearance problems. These are 11.5" gm metric brakes.
Another look at the narrowed diff. housing.
Test fitting the diff. The horz. bar behind the diff. will be the top coil overs mounting.
Once the diff is in the correct position I tack it into place and it will stay there until everything is attached to it.
Another look at diff.
Test fitting the body over the diff. Had to make the hump bigger in the car for the diff.
Replacing some rusty areas and making room for the engine and trans.
One floor board tacked into place. Really didn't loose much room by the pedals but more to the rear and even more on the passenger side. The shift lever on the side of the trans had to be shortened.
Wasn''t much metal left down here had to replace it. I used 16 gauge for the floors and other stuff. I had a 4' x 8' piece and used all of it.
Had to make room for the header on both sided of the car.
Replacing the right floor board. The wooden arc is my pattern for the trans. cover and transition piece.

Different views of the firewall and replacement of the metal where the battery used to sit. You can bend this metal easily by scoring it with a cutoff wheel on a side grinder then bending it over an edge.
The lokar shifter is supposed to sit on top of the trans in front of where it is now. Had to modify the existing bracket and arms.
Had to make a new trans. tunnel cover. Used bubble wrap that is used for insulation in campers as the mold. Laid it over the trans. and taped it into place and tapped everything I didn't want the resin to stick to and sprayed everything with furniture polish. Laid 2 coats of fiber glass cloth and saturated it with resin. Allowed to harden and then I pried it up and trimmed it. Like magic a trans. tunnel cover. It's a pretty blue and translucent.

This is the second attempt at the steering but didn't work. Would have had to remove the steering to change plugs. AS you can see it is tight. Will see the finished steering later on when the car goes back together.
Had to remove more of the ear on the block where I have been grinding for shaft clearance. This was the hardest job on this car.
Fabbed the fender body mount. Have a little metal to replace and the gusset on the upper but joint needs to be welded.
Taking the body off again.
Got the four links in pace and the shocks mounted. Notice the bottom link is longer than the top one. The top one needs to be longer but there is no room for it. All the brackets on the trans. tube home made out of 1/4" plate.
Things are coming together. This took a lot of time and trial and error. I laid the four links out on plywood with movable arms and found what works best for this car.
Another look at the rear end suspension.
This is a big rear end. Wish I had used an 8". Hind sight Ha Ha
(http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj570/philipcrawford/Old%20Basil%20upgrades/P1030951_zps7405264c.jpg)
Looking at the lay out. It's hard to see everything with one photo. If you have questions please ash and I will try to answer them.

This is the diff. mount for the panhard bar. It is 1 1/8" DOM steel and it was a bear to bend even after it was white hot. It goes over the top of the diff.
You can see I have the diff. jacked up to check the clearance of the panhard bar over the diff.
The panhard bar really worked out well and sits horizontal at normal ride height. This whole area became really tight.
I installed 325 gears with an auburn limited slip diff. in the rear end.
Wow . What a great build, beautiful work. You mentioned foaming your frame. I'm going to fill mine too.The Challenger car is built in Brampton Ontario, close to Toronto. I saw a program on how they were biult and they have some parts of the car foam filled.I'm doing a TR3 and afriend also is restoring a TR3. He knows people at the plant and is going to get info on how it is done. If that happens I will pass on the info to you.Tim ps some upgrade, how bout super tweak?
Tim
Let me know about the foaming the frame and thanks for looking.

Flipped the frame and welded everything on the bottom that I couldn't get to from the top. I weighed the frame with nothing attached and it weighed 178#, even I was supprised at how little it weighed.

Finished diff. cover.
Made the AC bracket adjustable and later added a belt tensioner.
Still looking at steering. You can see how tight it is through the header. I changed this set up later.
Had to clean up some sheet metal for the frame not to touch.
Eliminated the clutch pedal and adapted the drive by wire module to a new accelerator pedal. Made the jack shaft housing out of water pipe with skate board bearings. I saved the bearings when my kids were young and have had them for over 30 years. I am a true junk collector.

Fitting the 2 1/2" exhaust tacking as I go. The exhaust came out perfect only hanging 1/2" below frame. You can see the O2 sensor bung below header.

Cut, grind and weld when it is right.
I bought a X pipe kit from summit racing and it worked out well and was easy to use.
You can see the pipe going under the diff.
I used the flowmaster 50 series muffler because I didn't want it too loud. I have hangers at the front part of the x pipe and on both ends of the mufflers. I welded the mufflers together and they lay flat not like the photo.
I relocated the exit out of the muffler so the mufflers will lay flat and the exit is below the cross bar of the frame. i don't have a good photo of this.
The exhaust is complete.Yea.

Was able to use the TR emergency brake cables minus a little hardware but had to move the emergency brake back a little. This is the only thing I used off of the old frame.

Painted it outside with oil base primer and oil base flat black paint. I know there is better stuff to use but didn't feel like driving 2 hours.
I added the angled arms from the bottom of the crossmember back to the frame. You don't have to do this but I thought it would make it a little stiffer especially when braking. I was also concerned about going over a speed bump and there not being a horz. frame in this location would allow the oil pan to be crushed.

The old booster was a 7" single diaphragm and this one is an 8" dual diaphragm. Had to move it to the right about 3/4" to miss the steering shaft.

I am using an intake manifold off of a 2002 camaro ls1 but the fuel rail will not work with the lsx enjectors because of the height and because the plugs are different so I used the lsx enjectors and fuel rails and made the fuel lines from 3/8" brake lines and the transition ends of the lsx fuel line. If I had to do it over again I would use a LS1 motor.
Had to cut scallops out of the back for the exhaust. I used some 3" exhaust pipe for the metal. The muffer no longer hangs down under the car and gets knocked off. At least I hope not.
Had to remove the metal that protruded down because of the mufflers. Used 16 gauge metal.
The trans. hump is welded in place and other metal cut away in various places to make room for the frame.

Welded the rear fender and have everything floated and primed. I didn't weld the fender solid but stitched it about 3/8" apart.
Filed the fresh air vent with metal and welded in place.
Had to replace some rusty metal.
Used the metal I cut out of the trunk for the repair. I beat on it until the shape was right then welded it into place ground it down flush and spread bondo to get the shape right.
This car had been hit in the front and crushed the hood in the front and back. After I removed all of the bondo the work began. I had to remove some of the stiffners, reshape them and weld them back into place. I had to shrink the metal in the front by heating it. i spent as much time on the hood as I did on the rest of the car.
This is the mounting bracket for the shaved door opener. I welded it into place. I used the motor driven type because I didn't have room for a solenoid.
The engine compartment is done. Yea!! I used House of Kolor Kosmos Red over a white primer/sealer.
I built a paint booth in my shop and that is were I worked. After the body work was done and everything was primed and wet sanded to 600 grit this is the way I painted. I had not painted a car since I was 16 years old.
I sprayed the car with an epoxy primer/sealer followed with 3 coats of color and 3 coats of clear..Color sanded with 600 git until smooth and sprayed 3 more coats of clear. Colored sanded with 1500 grit then 2000 grit. Buffed the car in 3 stages of compound. Then your done. It was a pretty good job but I am glad I did it. A lot of work but saved a lot of money.

Ran the window washer through the firewall with a groumet.
I painted the windshield frame with the same urathane paint with less flatening agent as the back of the car. I lifted the edge of the rubber and pushed tv coaxial cable under it all the way around the frame. This kept the rubber off of the frame and allowed me to sand and repaint. Once finished I pulled the cable out. Worked great.

Getting ready to put the body on the frame.
Really enjoy the pictures and write-up Phil! I think I see "Smarties" candy in your hand? They are my favorite, but they don't work! My daughter got me a big bag for father's day, and I'm still no smarter.
Dennis
So you have spent over 2 years thinking, engineering, cutting and building on a defensless Little British Car ? Awesome job, I like it !
These things are labors of love but having it out on the road will be super, first time I drove mine with a V8 the front fenders were coat hanger wired on and with no rear wheel tubes the thing throw rocks at my head. LOL
You have some awesome skills, nicely done, that is one sweet ride, or should I call it a pissed off roller skate !
Dennis,
I guess I got caught. They are one of my favorites but they didn't work for me either. My daughter also loves them. The only thing they do for me is make fatter.
Thanks for looking at the progress. I know it is a lot to look at all at one time but I procrastinated for quite awhile. I have no doubt the journey is the destination because I have really enjoyed working thru all of the little issues.
Thanks for looking
Phil
Don't eat all of the smarties./
Ed
A skate board it is and a labor of love.
Thanks for looking I have more to come.
Phil
It does look great. Not just the paint, but all the work leading up it too!
Rob
Thanks for the kind words. I do appreciate them. It has been fun. I think my wife would like me to finnish and do a few honey do's.
Tks again
Phil
Once you get it broken in, you need to take it down to NOLA motorsports park for one of the Drag-N-Laps.

Starting to look more like a car than a skate board.

If you are wondering what the black thing with the wire coming out of it but were too polite to ask I will tell you. It is a switch box for the trans. selector to show you which gear you are in.. It didn't work so I am making another one and maybe it will work.

Just looking
(http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj570/philipcrawford/Old%20Basil%20upgrades/P1040459_zps6722a1f7.jpg)
I modified the old bumper bracket to make it work. I don't think this is going to stop very much.
The bottom of the car really come out clean. The exhaust came out well and out of the way. You can see the bottom link and shock support below the rear axel. I used the shortest coil over I could find and it still protruded down this far. The rule is it can not be below the rim. If you have a flat you can guess the rest.
I used the flash this time. With the removable trans. mount I should be able to remove the engine and trans. out the front hole.
I modified the existing anti sway bar to work with this front end The triangle thing on the bottom swing arm is the spindle stop I had to make this. I had to use the old antisway bar because they didn't make one this narrow.
This the third and I hope last mod I have to make on this mount. The plates the hiem joints bolt into had to be removed and replaced with plates with slots to be able to move the hiem joints around to get the clearance and the right angle for the universal joint.
You can see how the mufflers lay flat with the exit coming down below the cross member. I believe this is the only thing visible other than the wheels that is not stock looking.
Wires wires everywhere. Trying to protect the paint is tough.
This fuse/relay box is made for the ls motors. It was reasonable and had everything you need for a stand alone motor and trans.
Alt. and compressor are in place. Had to make the brackets. The comp. is adjustable and it also has a tensioner. The red hose goes the trans. for cooling. They hook to the radiator.
Hope it fits under the hood.
Ran the ac and heater hoses. If I had to do over again I would use solid hoses through grommets rather than these connectors.. They look good but have 8 places to leak.
Installed the brake master cylinder and booster and tubed the cylinder. Lost a ferrel out of a fitting. Had to use the coupling instead of solid tube because the flare that goes into the master cylinder is different from the double flare that is used now so I had to use the small pieces from the car.
Radiator and fan are in. The fan is16" and moves 2200 scfm. I mounted the radiator to the frame and not to the body to cut down on the vibration and ultimately a broken radiator.
AC condenser installed.
Filter dryer installed. I moved this thing 3 times because of the hood hinge.
The battery wire from the trunk came through the firewall below the ac hoses.
I am gradually using up all of the room.
Different look.
I worked on this hood support and I believe it will work. Once the hood is installed and alligned I will attach the black arm to the fender with a small clamp. The bracket takes the pressure because it works at the pivot point.
Now the hood is up. It takes a lot of force to push it down.

I used a shorter piston on this one because I needed the room for the air cleaner. It is harder to push down than the other one because of the up angle.
Trying to keep it quite.

I really liked your hood support. Can you share the size, part number, or application and where I could get one of the same size.
A lot of great work and engineering in that car. Looks great.
dale,
I am getting ready to leave town for a few days. But when I get back I will get the piston # and take some close ups of the system..It took me about a day to get worked out after a few trial and errors. I haven't tried it with the hood on yet but I believe it will easily hold up the hood. If not I will put another one on the other side. I wish I had worked this out before I painted, I still have the hook on the right fender.
Phil
Phil,
You have posted up some skill on this thread. I just envy your shop too!
I have a question on your 07 4.8 ls?. Did you change out your truck intake for a car intake? I thought the truck intakes sit pretty tall?
From your photos everything will fit under the hood with spare room. With my Ls1, I could have made my oil pan flush with the frame, but yours is a "custom frame".
Great job...Can't wait for a write up on this ride. That 4.8 can rev up nicely with just a few mods!
Calvin
Incredible. You've pretty well created the whole car from scratch, taking in various skills that most people would regard as specialist. Even veneering the dash would be a big deal to most.
I suppose now you're breeding your own beef for the leather to upholster the interior....
And when you're done it won't shout Look at Me, because it will appear almost stock. Or it could, depending what seats you choose. Be a shame to use modern buckets, just my opinion.
It took me 60 years to realise I don't have the skills or the persistence to create something like this, but I certainly admire those who do.
How easy is it to insure a car like this? Also getting it past whatever govt legislation might get in the way?
Ivor
Calvin,
The intake is off of a 2002 camaro ls1. Part of the fuel rail is off of the truck because the injectors are shorter and the plugs are different. I fabbed the fuel line from part of the old one.If I were to do it again I would use a ls1 because you have to change too many things on the motor to make it fit in a small car.
I going to leave the engine stock for now and pump it up later or get me a vette LS6 or build me a used ls1. I don't know yet. Once I finish this project I think there are a few honey du's that have been waiting for a while. Got my gauges today going to put them into the dash next and try to close the dash up.
Thanks for looking
Phil
Ivor,
Thanks for the kind words and looking at my project. I am not breeding any cows but I have a neighbor that has a few. I might just slip over there tonight and skin me one out and tan that rascal. Now that sounds like work.Ha! I hate to disappoint you but I plan to put some other seats in the car.
In louisiana I don't have to do anything special to register the car because it is already reg. and licensed but will change my insurance some maybe. My father was a jack of all trades and I follow in his footsteps except I am a master of none.

Phil
Come on Phil you are not telling us the whole story!! We know that you are mining the iron ore and you are smelting it to make the steel parts for your frame. The veneer from your dash must have come from a tree that you planted when you were 2 years old!! That paint you must have surely developed it in a lab in another part of your property!!
People like you raise the level to something that us mere mortals cannot attain. We are not worthy and we bow humbly in your presence!!
Seriously Phil you are a very talented guy and your humility is genuine.
Cheers
Byron
This is such an exciting build! Just awesome.
Byron
You are killing me man. Giving away all of my secrets. Being able to fix things is also a curse. When I first got married many years ago I lived in a subdivision with lot of kids with bicycles and lawn mowers. I would walk out on Sat. morning and there would be a line of kids needing things fixed. They didn't know my name just called me Mr. Fixit.. True story..They hated it when I moved a few years later.
Your car must be getting close to running by now. Hooked a battery to mine and it didn't blow any fuses and the motor turns over. I felt good about that. Don't give up just keep moving.
Tks
Phil
Curtis,
Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to look. I know there are a lot of photo's and it takes time to look. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Phil
Curtis
Thanks for the compliment. It has never felt like work.
Phil
What an amazing build Phil! I travel to South Louisiana often for work and you seem to fit the profile of most of the people I've met; capable and modest!
I thought long and hard about narrowing a mustang II front suspension for my Hillman but I ended up not doing it because I didn't want to dig into the front frame rails. I see what I was missing now... a lathe and the ability to use it! Seriously, there are two types of diy car builders, those that can do machine work and those that can't.
Ryan
Thanks for the kind words. A lot of the working people in La. are good craftsman and I think it comes from not having the money to buy things so they made it instead. I know you have most likely watched the show "Swamp people" and have seen the man Troy Landry along with a lot of other folks around Pier Part, La.
I worked with Troy for 15 years and consider him a friend and I can tell you he and his buddies could build anything from almost nothing. Our summer turn a rounds were always staffed with men from Pier Part after the crawfish season is over other wise they wouldn't come. You talk about independent. Troy is the real deal and what you see is what you get. I have to tell you my machine work is very weak. I have learned to do what I need to do but nothing too fancy. I have been working on my dash today but didn't get much done.
Thanks for looking
Phil
Phil, my two boys love watching "Swamp People"! Interestingly, I deal with Raceland Raw Sugars in my work and the guys know Troy Landry as he used to drive a cane truck for them at some time in the past. They told me exactly the same thing; Troy is just like you see on the show. One of the guys I know at Raceland has shown me pics of some of the gators he and his daughter trapped that ended up on the show as Elizabeth's gators! Having lived my whole life in Nebraska, getting to travel down your way 3-4 times a year is quite an experience. I love it!
So your difficulty with using the 4.8, I assume a lot of that would be eliminated by keeping the truck intake and accessories on it? I have a 4.8 in my Tahoe and I think it would be a great engine in a lighter car. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your project!
Ryan
Ryan
You speak of Raceland Sugar. I built a desk out of reclaimed cyprus from the old Raceland sugar or rice mill that was built in 1850. The old wood is great to work with and has a color that is hard to duplicate. One Xmas season on a monday morning Troy came to work and was telling us about his trip to Baton Rouge that weekend. Troy is very good at telling a story. It should take about 1.5 hours to get to BR from Pier Part but it took him about 2.5 hrs. I ask him how did he go that it took him so long to get there and he replied "What you mean how I go, I don't know highway I know bayou" . Classic Troy.. I'm about 2 hrs from BR but if you get my way give me a call and maybe we can meet up somewhere.
The 4.8.. To get the 4.8 in a car you have to change the oil pan, harmonic balancer, water pump and intake manifold. The intake is too high, the oil pan is too low, the water pump discharges the wrong direction and when you change the water pump you have to change the balancer because it sticks out too far. Other than that it is a great engine. The block more but that much more. I think the motor will be fine to start with.
Phil
Great story Phil! On the 4.8, I've got a '66 malibu I've thought about putting a 4.8 in. Although I suppose as cheap as 5.3's are it would make sense to go with one of those. If I did that I'd probably try to keep the truck intake, I'm sure I'd have to change the pan. I think that 4.8 is going to be more than fine in your TR!
Ryan
I have a friend with a 66 camaro convertible with a 5.3 and it is really quick. I believe you will have to change the intake to a camaro type for it it fit. You might also be able to keep all of the accessories in their stock position which would be great. I believe after 05 they were all drive by wire. If you get a DBW and go to a camaro intake you will have to change the water pump because the discharge goes straight up into the throttle servo and if you change the water pump the harmonic balancer will have to be changed to a camaro balancer because the pulley on the water pump is recessed towards the motor. Consider a LS1 and compare end price.
I'm happy with what I have for the time being. Have you been working on the malibu? I belong to a hot rod club and we may have some malibu's. We have a meeting tomorrow night I will try to check on what will fit.
Phil
Nope, I'm not working on the Malibu yet, it's a project for the future, maybe. I'm just finishing one project and kind of reassessing my car hobby and not starting anything major in the near future! My wife tells me to keep all my projects lined up for when the kids get older and I'm suddenly bored!
Ryan
Our car club met tonight but no one could give me an answer about the manifold fitting in the malibu. Ask on google and you will surely get an answer. Keep dreaming and one day you will have time to play.

Starting to look like a dash.
This is the trans. gear indicator. I ran an old boat control cable from the gear selector and made a linear switch to indicate which gear I am in and also gives me a backup light. I have LED's in the dash to indicate the gear.

Getting the dash to go into place was a tough job. With vintage aire ducts, wiring and the new gauges which are deeper it was a tight squeeze but it looks good.

I removed the steering lock and put the ign. sw. next to the AC controls. With the wireless control for the door locks one of the benefits is ign. disable when you hit the lock button. The key turns on but the motor won't crank until you hit the unlock button for the door opener. I installed 2 LED's above the AC controls one for the AC controls which comes on when the lights turn on and one above the ing. sw. that comes on when the door is opened. Will be nice to see the key when it is dark..

A friend came over and helped me put the hood in place for a trial fit. I needed to see how much room I had between the radiator and the hood for a fresh air duct for the motor intake. This is the first for me to see the hood on the car since before I painted it. It looks good.

The cable clamp on the left end of the round bar will be mounted to the fender with a 1/4" screw after the hood has been installed and alighned. It doesn't have to have a lot of support.

Mounted the fuel pump and filter regulator with return line on an aluminum panel and mounted the panel through 1/2" rubber to try to keep it quite. The fuel line going to the motor comes up just right of the fuel pump. It is hard piped with 3/8" steel brake line all the way to the motor.

The dash support will also house the radio. I am covering this vertical and horizontal area past the shift lever will be covered with the rosewood.
Nice work Phil,
With so many TR6v8 projects with custom frames, it gives me hope for my next project!
It can be done!
Keep-em-running!
Don
Thanks for looking and what is your next project. I Think my next one will be a MG midget with a miata motor and trans. for my daughter who is 13 now. I'm not going to do as much modification on it as I did on the tr6.
Tks
Phil
I have been dreaming about a complete C4 , maybe a GTO, or CTS under a widened TR6 body.Custom sub frame, glass, custom soft top with maybe a little through back look with theTR4 hood bump...maybe 2 bumps.
Don
Sounds llike a plan. I hope it takes place sooner then later.

I finally finished the rest of the dash today and it looks good. I have a ring that goes around the base of the shift lever cover will install tomorrow. The electric window controls are in the horizontal part. When I pushed the switches into the hole the wires just pushed it back out. Just not enough room for the heavy wires in that small of area so I had to reconfigure it with 2 relays per window and move it behind the radio. I have just 3 small wires going to the switches now and they didn't pop out this time.

The dash area has been a lot of work but well worth it. When people look inside your car you want to shine and look good.
I'm getting closer with just a gas tank and the carpet and seats.
Those seats look good. What are they from, and will they clear the soft-top mechanism when it's folded?
Ivor
Ivor
These are the tr seats that cam with the car. I may change seats or I might not.
Thanks
Phil
Ahhh, yes, that's what the decrepit seats I inherited were supposed to look like!
I changed to Miata, with separate headrests, which for me were more comfortable and, imho, when trimmed to match the interior, don't look out of period. Also, they have the inwards taper to clear the soft-top frame. Getting the seating right can take a lot of time, but is pretty important if one wants to be in the car for any length of time.
One unexpected problem with the Miata seats was that the mounts I first used - from TR Trader - lifted the seat an inch or so, and that was enough to put my eyeline near the top of the screen frame. This is a real nuisance in seeing traffic lights and road signs, so I had to revisit the mounts and lower them. That's OK now, but the seat back comes pretty close to the B pillar so it's hard to get the seat belt (inertia reel) around the side of the seat.
The only way to know whether seats suit you is to try them for a good long time, so if you buy some new ones I'd run the driver's seat in place for a while before you go to the trouble of recovering them. Be a shame to find you've spent time on a dead-end.
Nice that you're approaching the time when things like seats become a consideration.

I decided to make my tank out of steel because it was something I could do and cost about $50.00. It was made out of 16 gauge, I wanted 18 gauge but would have to order it so I used the 16 gauge instead. The 18 gauge is about two pounds/sq ft and the 16 gauge is about 2.5 lbs/sq ft. The tank weighs about 40 lbs, heavier than aluminum but about $350.00 cheaper. I welded the tank up with a small acetylene torch with a very fine flame that I borrowed from a friend. It is made to weld sheet metal on car bodies.
The tank sits in the tire well. I made the top of the tank level with the ground so there would not have to be a vent in the rear of the tank that wants to spit gas when you really hammer it. There is a baffle front to back with a small basin for the pick up to rest in.
The pickup is 3/8" steel brake line. The fittings are brake line couplings silver soldered in to the tank. The other one is the return line from the filter regulator. If the line should ever be a problem I could unsolder the coupling and do the repair although it would be a royal pain in the but.
If you look closely you can see the 45 deg cut on the end of the pick up tube. A flat cut would not be the thing to do here and would surely plug itself. I took some close measurements and drilled holes in the top of the tank over the baffle to be welded up later so the baffle would be attached to the top of the tank.
There is some warpage but not enough to be bothersome. The fill neck is made out of 2" exhaust pipe. The vent is up high on the fill neck I don't if you can see it or not. It's a 3/8" barb fitting silver soldered in place. You can also see the fuel gauge sending unit mounting hole and the suction and return lines. I pressure tested the tank and checked for leaks with soapy water. I had one leak just below the suction line ended up silver soldering the leak because the solder had covered the weld and could no longer weld in the area of the solder.
I put the tank in place and tacked the mounting tabs in place then took the tank out welded the tabs up and painted with oil base primer and put the tank back in place. I am pleased with the out come except for the weight. If I had a tig machine I would have used aluminum. Next time maybe..

It seems the only space left under the hood is in front of the radiator so this is the home of the washer tank.
Fantastic work, again.
Regarding the tank, are you not concerned about ethanol corrosion?
Ivor
Ivor
Never gave corrosion from ethanol on a steel tank a second thought. Should I have?
Phil
I've been running regular high test gas for years in my steel gas tank in my TR with no problem. Sounds like a question for a chemist or Fred.
Tim
I have never had a problem either and with the tank already in the car it is not likely to get much thought.
TKS

Most factory OEM fuel tanks are galvanized inside and out. You could always use some kind of gas tank sealer like the motorcylce guys do. Just a thought but you know how water gets into gasoline storage tanks and condensation always rears its ugly head and causes rust to form. Not a pretty thought. Ounce of prevention.
John
Thanks for the info. I will consider the info.
Phil
Phil here is a possible solution to prevent corrosion in your gas tank. Check out the following link for a POR-15 product speciffically designed for gas tanks: http://www.por15.com/US-STANDARD-TANK-SEALER/productinfo/TSG/
You could buy some of this and pour it in your tank and slosh it around and then let the excess drain out. You probably would have to leave the tank in a drain position to prevent the POR_15 from accumalating and plugging your pick up line.

Hi Phil,
the problem isn't with the Ethanol corroding the fuel tank.
The issue is that Ethanol is hygroscopic. It draws moisture out of the air.
So when the moisture in the Ethanol contacts the raw steel tank, or fuel lines or aluminum parts for that matter, it corrodes (rusts) them.
The best fix is to get the tank and lines etc. plated or galvanized.
The second as mentioned is a coating. But make sure that the coating is compatible with your fuel. Some aren't.
The simplest and easiest is to just keep the tank full when the car is parked. No air space means no moisture.
Cheers
Fred
By the way nice work on the car Phil!
Fred
Thanks for the info. Most of the time I will be using non ethanol gas so it shouldn't be a problem. But a full tank is a sure bet.
Thanks again
By the way the wild hogs around here could give a race horse a good run for it's money. One tore up my yard last night. Have to bait the cage.
Philip,
Did you figure out your steering tolerances?
Calvin,
Haven't had time to think about just got some miata seats and got side tracked. I might take the ball out of the hiem joint and drill it out and insert a 5/8" bronze bushing. This should tighten it up some what.
Thanks
Phil
No new photos but have been working steadily. Had some start up problems with the motor. When i started it up it ran really fast all the time with no control from the throttle pedal. After chasing rainbows for 2 days I found the throttle body was being held open by a piece of plastic in the servo body. This throttle was slightly damaged when the tree fell on the truck and a piece of the broken plastic got up in the gears. It ran great after that. When you chase wires for a while you get real well aquainted with the wiring.
I took the car down the road yesterday for short ride on a back road and it ran well. It will definitely tack out quickly.
Did a little paint repair and it turned into bear. If I had used a dark primer it would have saved a lot of time in the repair. Should have some more photos soon.
Phil
Hi Phil,
Congrats on the first drive out on the back roads!! Must have been fun. I remember mine with no seats installed around the block.
Hey Calvin
Good to here from you. It was fun.. I had seats but not bolted down and no hood. I am sure it didn't take long for you realize these cars are fasts with these big engines. But not too fast.. I believe the bugs I have left will be taken care with some computer work when I get it dino tuned. How is your car running? I saw your autocross it looked like fun. Never done that. Are you going to make any changes in the car in the future? There is always something you can do to improve the car. Do you have a in tank fuel pump? Mine is not and it is really noisy. Will try a little sound proofing to see if that helps. One day I may have to put it into the tank if I can't quite it down.
See you later
Phil

When I started to install the front bumper this hole appeared and the one that was supposed to be there was not. This is not an original fender and I guess it is for a late 74 instead of an early one. So I got the grinder out and cut down to the metal and welded the hole up and reprimmed, painted, cleared, color sanded and buffed. What a hassel.

The only thing left is the interior. Been driving it around and it has been fun to finally drive it after almost 3 years.
Hi Phil. She's a real beauty.Looks Great.Do you think that fuel pump is noisy because its so small and has to work hard all the time, I mean they pump a lot of gallons per minute for a small pump.I'm putting one on my TR3 and I'm wondering about the noise too.
Tim
I believe the right way to do it is put it in the tank which solves a lot of problems. They are always pumping a lot more than you need with the recirculation and this is what keeps them cool with the fuel going around the motor. I already had the pump when I decided to build my tank so I went with it. If it is still noisy after the back is closed up I may pull the tank and install the pump in the tank. I hope not.....Thanks for the compliment I too like the way it looks.
Thanks
Phil
Had a bit of a set back picked up a whining noise in the diff and had to pull the chunk. When I replaced the pinion bearings and crush sleeve I didn't torque the bearings correctly and ruined them in about 50 miles. Replaced the bearings and crush sleeve today and torqued to 25 inch pounds. Should finish the alighnment tomorrow. It took me 7 hours to pull the third member and had to cut a crossmember in front of the diff. Will replace with a bolt in unit in case I have to do this job again. I had never set up a diff. before and I was always uneasy so I guess I was not totally supprised when I heard the noise. The life of a hot rodder.
Wish me luck.
Phil
Setting up a diff is one job I would never do. Needs special tools and gauges, a lot of hassle.
The fuel pump setup looks like the one in my injection car. Yes, one hears it whining away, but it's just part of the car's soundtrack. Would never put it in the tank, more hassle when it goes wrong.
Having to cut the x-member illustrates a problem of one-off builds - maintenace access. Car makers have whole teams of people working on that sort of thing, you just have you.
Must say it's an amazing acheivement to fit all that modification into the car and have it still look externally standard.
Are you going to put a soft-top on it? That's another lot of fun, getting the screen, soft-top and windows to line up.
Ivor
Differentials are not so bad, if you don't mind tedious. Worst part is doing the same thing over and over and over and over and...................
Don't much care for crush sleeves though, I'd much rather use a solid spacer and shims on the pinion.
Jim
Ivor
Thanks for the support and looking at my project. Had to replace the pinion bearings and crush sleeve because they were too loose. Just didn't do them right the first time. I believe I have it correct this time and hope fully never have to do this job again. Ken the (poolman) came by and helped me put that heavy ^%$#%&&%## in the hole. Thanks Ken!!!! Should finish it up tomorrow and be back on the road this week. I do have a soft top and put a new top on before I started the project. I don't think it is perfect but it is OK and it was a bear to do.
Jim
I have never done a diff with shims but I can see where it could be better. You need to be a young man to crush that sleeve. I used a 4' cheater to turn that bad boy. You set the pinion to 25 inches Lbs of rotational torque with new bearings. I used a 1 lbs. bag of red beans on the end of a 25" stick.. Worked great and you could move the beans the weight along the stick until you got to the 25".
Phil
Installed the diff. a couple days ago and had to get Ken (poolman) to help me push it into the hole. Just wasn't enough push in this old body. Everything is back in place and hopefully correct this time. I had mentioned my concern about the slack in the oversize heim joints. I replace them with 3/4" heim joints and reinforced the mounting bracket (someone suggested this but I don't remember who. Thanks) and this made a lot of difference. The slack is barely noticeable now. Also replaced the steering column bushings while I had everything out.
Before I pulled the diff. I had a chance to try out the cruise control and it worked beautifully just like a gm car.
Phil
Hi Philip,
I'm glad the 3/4" heim joints worked out for you!
Cruise control "Nice"
Calvin
Calvin the 3/4" hiem joints worked out really well.
Thanks
Phil

As you may recall I modified the hood hinge with a piston. The modification was plenty strong to hold the hood up but it warped the hinge when closing causing the hood to move side ways and close on top of the finder and the new paint (ask me how I know). Nothing ventured nothing gained you never know until you try and I love trying. So, the piston had to go and I made a manual hood support that worked really well and was able to use the origional hood support rod. Here are the photo's of the new rig.

These are the new 3/4" heim joints and I also reinforced the heim mounting bracked. These joints nearly eliminated the slack in the steering. The front end drives really nice and tracks in a straight line and steers with little effort.

Was able to use part of the wind funnel into the radiator and it worked well.
I guess this is it until the interior is complete so see you later.
Took the car out to test the rear end and everything sounded smooth and quite.
Phil
I am still working on the interior but should be finished this week but found time to ride in the 4 july parade with my daughter. We had about 15 cars from our Rod club. This is a small town and anyone can participate just show up..
The irony of an english car in this parade was lost on most.

The car is finally finished. It has been fun to build and drive. The seat covers are from Mr. Mike's and they are really high quality also bought some extra leatherette for the panels which I did my self. The leatherette is wheat and the carpet is a dark brown feintuft valour wool carpet. Here are the photo's.

That is a very definite upgrade, the car never looked anywhere near that good even when it was brand spanking new. Good job Phil.
Jim
Agree, great work. Interior looks as good as the rest of the car!
Wow! Phil. Was showing my wife your build diary and got to the new pics and was blown away. Hadn't even seen them myself until I showed them to her. Like I said today "there is no greater pleasure than to stand back, look at something proudly and say ' I built that myself!'"
Great job Man! I know you have to be smiling large when you drive her! I only hope mine can be half as nice.
Mike

Thanks guys for looking it has been fun but I am glad I it done for the time being. Thinking about doing a car for my daughter. She will be driving in 2 years.
