Title: How Fast ? correction
Post by: roverman on June 06, 2012, 07:58:18 PM
TR 7 roadster, driven by Craig Leinicke, runs approx 119 mph with 108 rwhp., at the Maxton mile. Therefore, to double speed should require hp squared = 8x 108hp, or 864hp.. Got game ?  roverman.

So will a supercharged 5.0L Jag V8 fit? That should give you enough power if well set up.

David and clan, the "logical choice", is RV8. With heads and other required parts, available now for the Rover, keeping the car on the ground, should prove to be more of a problem. Cheers, roverman.

You're getting your calculations mixed up a bit.  Squaring = 4x.  Cubing = 8x.
While aerodynamic drag is proportional to the square of velocity, the power
required to overcome it is proportional to the cube of velocity.  Using the
simplifying assumption that all the drag is aerodynamic, if we assume 108 RWHP
gives a 118 MPH top speed (optimally geared), it should take 526 RWHP to go
200 MPH for the same vehicle. This is a terminal velocity calculation and
ignores any time to accelerate.  864 RWHP will get you 238 MPH.

Thanks for the math. Good news is, "Mojave Air Strip" also has 1.5 mile runs,(12,000 ft. long run area). Top speed so far is approx 235 mph. The big question is, can this happen with a 4bbl RV8, all motor, with race gas or maybe E98 ? The Quest, roverman.

Art, Mojave Air Strip, you mean Muroc sorry,I mean Edwards can be used again ?

I'm sure it's military, so Edwards ?  Mojave Speed Challenge, or such has a webbsite. They've had two events, so far.  Cheers, roverman.
