Title: anyone know about mini coopers?
Post by: rficalora on March 03, 2012, 01:57:22 PM
My son's been looking for a car & he ran across an '06 Mini Cooper with a bad motor.  Looks to be a good deal based on asking price of the car & engine price @ LKQ.

Anything in particular I should check out?

Rob.

No one has answered.

I cannot answer correctly regarding Modern Minis.

Since this is a conversion website and you know everyone who reads this is thinking it.....

Yes, check out the width, depth and length of the engine bay. Look under the dash and see how much you can cut into it.

Move to the rear of the car and see how much room is there for potential replacement.

If the dimensions are there, a nice LSX will fit in the front with a 9" in the rear or possible IRS.

Original engine? Here at the British V8 site, we don't need no stinkin' original engine!

Please forgive me. I have stepped out of character.

How  did the motor get bad?  Neglected maintenance?

Too funny.  Remember, this is for my 16 yr old...  The last thing he needs for a 1st car is a LS powered mini.. But, I did tell my wife if it doesn't work out for him I'd seriously consider it as a replacement for her car.

As for what happened to the motor, I still don't know.  Guessing it's already sold because seller hasn't returned call or email.

We (well actually its my wife's car) have a 05 S. It's a fun car to drive, I have to pry it out of her hands just so I can change the oil!LOL
They are pretty reliable cars.
The one thing to watch out for is the CVT transmission found in the non-S models. With proper fluid changes they'll last a long time. However there are no internial parts avilable for the CVT trans, so if it fails your looking at a complete assembly and they're REALLY spendy.
The manual and 6 speed auto tranys are repairable and for the most part trouble free.
