Title: British V8 2012
Post by: danmas on January 13, 2011, 01:43:19 PM
No, it's not too soon to be thinking about 2012. Traditionally, the location and date of the next event is announced at the current event banquet. That means if you're thinking about hosting it, there are only four months left to do the preliminary legwork/planning to see if it is feasible for you.

I announced the 2011 meet at the 2010 meet after thinking about it for only a couple of hours (reluctantly, and only because no-one else volunteered and it looked like there wouldn't be one unless I did), but I had done two meets before in the same location and knew what I was up against. If you haven't done one before, you'll need these four months for pre-planning before the announcement in May, when the serious planning begins.

Hopefully, a few of you are seriously considering it, but if not, someone needs to start thinking about it soon.

Anyone? If you're thinking about it, please let me or Mike Greico know. We'll be glad to help you in any way we can to plan the event, and to answer any questions you may have.

And, I'm sure, any one of the fine folks who have hosted previous events will also be glad to answer any questions and give you sound advise.

These meets are too good to miss. 2013 and 2015 are covered, let's get 2012 covered as well. We can worry about 2014 later.

Thanks, Dan.

I can offer advise to any who have not hosted an event such as these before. I coordinated MG99, and was part of the coordination for BritishV8 2005 and BritishV8 2010. The Three Stooges have committed to BritishV8 2015.

As Dan said....now is not too early to begin planning for BritishV8 2012.

Rumour is that a certain MGB racing Crew chief resident in NC has stepped up to the plate for 2012.

Woah guys, I thought we were headed to Omaha, NE (instead of Kanas City) for 2012. Not that I want to drive that far. I will for Bill Young, though.  Yeehaw!!!!

Not official, but this is how I understand things are unfolding......
2011.......Townsend, TN
2012....... Raleigh, NC
2013.......Omaha, NE

I know it's a long way west for some of you guys, but some of the western guys were wanting something closer to them. If everything goes as planned I'll be retiring around September of 2012 and have the time necessary to do the legwork to set up the meet for 2013. Omaha is tentatively the location, but not carved in stone yet. They have several attractions similar to what we enjoyed in Indy in the area. There are some  other locations we're considering, but those lack some of the features found in Omaha. Hopefully we can get some cars in from the west coast for that one.
Carl, we'll do everthing we can to make the trip worthwhile for all you eastern guys.

Bil

From now on, all the British V8 gatherings should be in Omaha or Tulsa or Kansas City.

The very middle of the USA only makes for the shortest drives or tows for everyone.

keep them on the track

QuoteFrom now on, all the British V8 gatherings should be in Omaha or Tulsa or Kansas City.

That would mean you and Bill would have to alternate sponsoring the meet every year. Sounds like a good plan to me.

The only reason it's in Townsend this year is because I was stupid brave enough to take it on.

Quote from: ex-tykeRumour is that a certain MGB racing Crew chief resident in NC has stepped up to the plate for 2012.

Can anyone confirm this?  NC crew chief - True?

Any day now I'll go into the panic mode as the date of the 2011 meet approaches - only three weeks to go!

Every thing is good to go except the Bluegrass Band. Still working on that. You'd think it would be easy to get a Blue Grass band in this part of the country, but it ain't.
Title: Re: British V8 2012
Post by: Bill Young on April 24, 2011, 12:23:58 AM
Dan, why didn't you say something earlier. My wife has a cousin in Ashville who plays in a Bluegrass band. Don't know their schedule, but I can find out if you want. I'm sure he would also know of any other bands in the area as well.
Phil, part of the fun of the yearly meets is to see other parts of the country and new roads, tracks, and museums. If the meets hadn't been in Port Washington, WI ; Durham, NC ; and Indianapolis the past three years I'd have missed out on the Experimental Aviation Museum, Virginia International Raceway, Motion Machine, O'Reilly Raceway Park, Prototype Developments and a lot of other stuff. I think it's nice that we move around a bit. I'm looking forward to hosting th 2013 event here in this part of the country and I hope we can show our friends things like Mid American Motorplex, the Smith Racing Museum, and other sights in this part of the country. The majority of our group seems to live in the eastern third of the country, so I really doubt if we'll ever get further west, but who knows we might do that some day.
And don't worry Rick, I've already checked and there will be a Hooter's in the area so you won't feel to homesick. ;-)

Kelly, you need to find someone midway between Tennessee and Texas that likes Dickle or fine red Italian table wine! ;-)  I'll probably take a couple of days going down and stop over with a cousin down in Oklahoma on the way. Should be my last vacation from work, I'll retire in August and then no more having to request vacation except for asking the wife.

Kelly, Better then the Dickle, I'm told that there is a Tim Horton's in Palestine, TX.
Although perhaps it could be only wish full thinking.

Merv, could be wish full thinking. This may be the closest Kelly gets to a Horton down in east Texas.

You guys are all heart!  Guess spellcheck doesn't show it, but it is DICKEL  WHISKY  not Whiskey.  Tim Horton's would be great, and residents have to leave Palestine and go some distance to find a Hooter's I think.   Hooter's web site doesn't show 1.
Louisnana used to have the lowest prices on on Liquor due to extemely low state taxes.  I plan to check as I pass through.
Guess I will leave the Tequilla home this time.

Palestine (by the way, it's pronounced "Pal-uh-steen", not "Pal-uh-styne", like the Middle Eastern country) is "wet" - meaning there are full liquor stores in town.  Unfortunately, the closest Hooters is about 90 miles away.  I sincerely apologize for not considering the Hooters locations when deciding the event location.  I promise not to do it again.....

We are both excited to attend our first BV8 meet! We are not going to let another one pass by.

Looking forward to see all the swaps, and Rick's Purple MGB GT :-)

We will be attending Triumpest 2011 this year in Big Bear. It will be fun as we will try the auto-X out, among other fun things to do. Maybe I can dial in my rear sway bar better.

I just reserved our Suite, 20th through 23rd.

Notice to all, call them to register, and be sure to let them know that you are part of the group. I couldn't register on line as it shows there are no rooms available. The young lady told me that they were sold out because of the British V8 car show. When I told her I was part of that group, she checked with her manager and they took my reservation.

See you all in May!

Stay tuned for an update on an event planned for Shreveport La. stop over Saturday nite, on way to Palestine.   Looks like we will have a WARM-UP  gathering and caravan the final 175 miles to Palestine on Sunday.  Hotel and plans  to be announced soon.  Saturday should be a great travel day and we can meet up for a parking lot party.  Shrevepot has casinos and other attractions.  Local MG'ers will probably drop by also.    Stay tuned :)

I hope to see you all in Palastine !   My Jag has come a long way in the last 6-8 months.   All the mechanicals are finished.  It is getting painted Monday (Dark Gray Metallic).   Now for all the "reassembly" -  windows, finish the wiring and interior work.   It may not be totally finished by May but I plan on driving it to Palastine anyway.  Some of the interior trim might be missing but I can live with that.  Wish me luck!

I'm thinking it should be early on, maybe in the first or second day but have no real preference as to whether it is say mid morning, mid afternoon or early evening. Anyone have a preference?

OK, the registration form and schedule are finalized and are posted on the meetings page.  Go to
http://www.britishv8.org/British-V8-Meetings.htm.  Download the PDF version and you'll see the final schedule.

We will have dyno sessions and slalom/autocross.  Lots more to do.

Monday we'll have a Rallye/Poker Run.  Prizes and fame for the winner(s) of that.  Also Monday will be a tour of the Texas State Railroad Steam Train repair facility in nearby Rusk.  Kind of like a car guys' shop, but with much BIGGER stuff!

Tuesday will be busy with the dyno sessions and slalom event.  Tuesday night we'll have a Texas Hold 'em Poker tournament - winners will receive event regalia and top winner will also get a free hotel night.

Questions - contact me directly at 972-618-1984 (evenings/home) or 214-236-0232 (day/cell).  If you call during the day, and I don't answer, leave a message.  I have a day job and sometimes I'm in a place where I can't talk at the time.

Or you can contact me via e-mail at:   wkube (at) augustmail (dot) com.  Looking forward to seeing everyone in Palestine!

Send in your registration now.

Never been to Palestine, but looking @ the map it looks to be about 3hrs -- sort of depends where in Houston... Spring/Woodlands area would be about 2.5hrs; Katy, Friendswood, or southern areas you could easily add an hour.

Looks to be a pretty straight shot though - US84 from Palestine to Buffalo where you'd pick up I45 & head south.

Hey Wayne, you might want to check with Curtis - I registered using the on-line registration/PayPal payment option on the 5th but it's not showing in the list above. There may be others that registered that way that you're not seeing yet too.

Rob and all -

There's no  problem with the form submission as far as I can tell.  Just that PayPal and/or my e-mail took about a day for it to land in my inbox.  The payment landed in my PayPal account no problem.

OK guys,  there a few rooms left in Shreveport at the Best Western for the Warm-Up prior to the V8 meet.  Better call now, looks like several can make the stop w/o any additional mileage.  Very few more miles if you drop down from Texarkana.

Wayne,
One more thing about the autocross, on the Schedule Of Events, you state that on Tuesday, we'll be "given a couple of timed runs". Do you mean this as two runs or do you think we'll get a chance to feel out the course layout?

We're not requiring a helmet, but you're welcome to use one if you have it.

You should be able to run at least 2, so yes, we'll try to give you a feel for the course layout.  It all depends on how many sign up to run the course.  We've got it all day Tuesday, and can also use it on Wednesday morning if we need to.

Anyone with an interest in the Roadmaster tour schedule should be at our meeting on Tuesday evening in the hotel meeting room around 8:30. We need to take a look at the schedule from the end of the Power Tour until August at least if not beyond. Looks like we can get the car to Colorado after the Power Tour, but don't know how or where it will get back east after that.

After visiting the Johnson Space Center on Friday we will go onto Galveston.   We will leave Galveston Sunday morning and will be driving on Texas 19.  Anyone living in or near Houston want to caravan?

Brenda and I are hitting the road early in the morning (Wed)1am from Elk Grove Ca. We will be red eyeing it ,,,, shooting for  Albuquerque New Mexico somewhere. So 1st leg will be 16 hour run (Hwy 40 from barstow). Then in the morning (Thurs) we will head for an 8 hour run to Amarillo, then taking 228 to 287 to Wichita Falls (south east). Will be seeing my son at Sheppard AFB for a day or so. It will be a 4 hour run to Palestine on 287 from there (Sunday).

So if anyone sees us wave or caravan with us!

This is our rig....would like to be driving my car, but maybe a little to far for Brenda's comfort level.

This is the verbage on the back of the trailer to identify us since there isn't any other markings (all white)

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Mary and I are already in Fort Worth. We left Wisconsin on Tuesday with the "top down" and drove for two days enjoying  the breeze. What a great feeling after our crazy spring weather. Car ran great except for loosing a tailight rim and lens in a construction zone.( I guess I should have checked the retaining screws.) I was able to get lenses from Moss but the rims were B/O'd. Does any one have an extra lens ring for an early MGB they could bring along? I would be happy to purchase or return after the event. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting alot of new people in Texas.     Paul

Jim, his two sons and I will be leaving Florence, Ky.in my Sienna van after I get there on Saturday afternoon.  Jim's oldest son Dave works the night shift, so we will be pulling the red-eye Saturday night.  Depending on timing we may swing by Shreveport and catch up with the group Sunday morning.  Where are you guys having breakfast?

Paul - I'm pretty sure I have a spare ring Paul.  It's not one you'll want for the long term - i'm sure it's pitted.  But should be good to hold the lenses in till you get home.  I'll bring it.  When are you heading out from the DFW area?  If not till after I get there Sunday (about 12:30) I can get it to you there so you'll have it from the trip from there to Palestine.

Carrick will be arriving at Chateau Ingram in an hour or so...we'll be leaving for BritishV8 tomorrow morning (Friday).

Overnighting between Memphis and Little Rock Friday night and anticipate an early afternoon arrival in Shreveport on Saturday.

Breakfast on Sunday? Don't know the area and it's not that far of a drive to Palestine...so who knows?!

Your hosts (Wayne, Jeremy, Nick, Gene) will be leaving the Dallas area on Saturday around noon, getting to Palestine a couple hours later.  Ric will be leaving Houston on about the same schedule.  Looking forward to seeing the full range of cars.  Since the Roadmaster will probably be the cream of the crop, we'll be bringing the other extreme to keep the tables balanced.  (Evil Grin)

We made it to Wichita Falls 5:30 Pm  today without any problems. I like the gas prices here in TX compared to Ca, almost a buck less per gallon. "Wow" that 16 hour run was a killer, the 8 hour run today was alot better. Was trying to draft the semi trucks within reason to help out with gas milelage. So we were getting 9 miles per gal at best. It would have been way better on gas milelage doing this run in the 6. Probably could have run 470 + on 19 gal of gas!

Anyway only a 4 hour run to Palestine next leg. May run into Rob out of Dallas Sunday!

We checked on the room situation at the Hampton Inn this afternoon.  There *are* still rooms available, just not at the BV8 negotiated rate of $80.  However, I suspect if you call the hotel directly, you can probably talk them into the BV8 rate, or at least something lower than standard.  What are they going to do, give up a reservation and let the room sit empty?  Just saying.....

Good to read about the trips inbound.  Getting excited!

Good to hear that Paul & Mary are in Ft. Worth.  We've driven almost 1100 miles since Wednesday.  Spent last night in Memphis, TX and got into Houston to a motel right accross from NASA about 8:00P
M.  Car is running great but we didn't go top down.  Top was up with the rear window zipped out.  Drove fast but took a lot of breaks.  Patty is recovering from a broken foot bone.  Tomorrow we will go on a tour of NASA, visit relatives in Houston and then go to Galveston.  See you all Sunday.

Ken and Katie came in yesterday evening and headed out this morning. We put them up in the guest suite and had a great visit.

Mike Moloney, Graham, and Gordon stopped in about 1:00 and had a bowl of chili with us, visited for a bit and were on their way.

Safe travels to all, and don't forget, Blackwood Labs is a friendly and hospitable stopping point. Can't always guarantee a pot of chili, but you'll always be welcome.

QuoteCarl, what's the problem with Ol' Red? Just not enough tread left on those tires?

Lot's of things. Don't think the Toys have 2000 more miles left, though. Maybe 500-1000 if it doesn't rain.  ;)

Bummer, Jeb!

----

I finished putting my front suspension together today, and now I'm just back from the first test drive.  A new coilover set-up plus dropped spindles... all seem good.   My tires are lousy, but not as bald as Carl's, so I guess I'll pack now and get on the road Saturday morning.   I plan to come down through Pueblo and Trinidad CO before turning east (i.e. favoring New Mexico over Oklahoma).  Mapquest says 15.5 hours, 945 miles.

Carrick, Jean, and I got on the road about 10am.

Fairly uneventful trek...we're overnighting between Memphis and Little Rock and should be in Shreveport mid-afternoon tomorrow.

Little mishap near Marion, IL...had to leave Carrick's trailer at a truckstop. Wheel bearing toasted, bunged up the axle, shredded a tire, which buggered up the clamshell.

Flatbedded into town; will pick it up next week.

See you in Palestine....if not, we'll hoist a cold one for you while we talk about you.

Hey Ken & Katie,

Rob F, Dad and Brenda and I are going to try and meet up in Ennis where hwy 287 and hwy 45 meet. There is a Taco Bell right off the 45 in Ennis on the west side of the freeway, address 1107 East Ennis Avenue Ennis, TX 75119. We were shooting for 2:30pm to 3:00pm (Sunday). You will probably be going south out on Dallas on hwy 45 to 287 to go towards Palestine. I hope we all can ride in together!...

Brenda and I will get on the road 11:00am Sunday out of Wichita Falls.

Had fun spending time with my son today + giving rides to his friends off Sheppard Air Force Base in our Tr6. Trying to show the younger generation the hobby, they showed a lot of interest.

What a GREAT, GREAT meet!

I'm starting to sort photos...

Can someone please help me with match up a couple cars to their owners names?

I know I met both Ray Holzapple and Phil Marcel... but I'm having a hard time at the moment remembering which gentleman brought the damask red factory MGB GT V8 and which gentleman brought the white one.

Also, can someone please help me match the pretty little British racing green chrome-bumper four-cylinder MGB to a name?

Thanks!

Looks like it's from Missouri.  Only MO registration was Bill Young.  He was in the Jag.  I don't remember this car in the hotel parking lot.  Maybe somebody local wondering what all the British cars were doing at Montee's?
