Title: rare bird: Hawke DL11 race car
Post by: Moderator on November 09, 2010, 01:34:11 AM
New to the British Race Car website... I think this Hawke DL11 (Formula Ford, circa 1973) is especially interesting because it includes so many custom steel fabrications in places where other car constructors would have used purchased components. For example, check out the home-made Heim joint (sort of) that supports the steering column at the dashboard and also the hub carriers (both front and rear).

Read all about it here:  <a href="http://www.britishracecar.com/GordLeach-Hawke-DL11.htm">Gord Leach's 1974 Hawke DL11 Formula Ford Racecar</a>

Curtis, you've outdone yourself with this one. A great photo article. Really well detailed photos and captions. Great job.

Curtis,

So very nostalgic

These cars were the cream of SCCA racing in the '70's.

Every Production racer looked up to these guys !

keep them on the track,

Oh yes, Formula Ford, RIR., CA., circa 1983, I was in my first few minutes(ever), of track time, SCCA driver school,(Huff GT 1 Triumph).  This FF car was on my butt, like a bad smell ! Being the barefoot pilgrim of the bunch, I managed to get in, way over my head. I somehow managed 5 laps before disaster struck. Don't talk to me about Formula Fords ! Cheers, roverman.

You gentlemen are too kind. (Thank you!)

Gord's Hawke was an especially fun car to photograph and to write about, plus Gord (and his buddies Gary and Mike) were plying me with some wonderful microbrew from Regina Saskatchewan.

I especially like Formula Ford because I imagine that I could possibly build one myself one day. New racecar companies seem to come along every couple years, and typically they bring a new idea or two with them and the rest of the class has to scramble a bit. In that sense, the formula has been very successful. As an inexpensive class for drivers to start in... it used to be that, but not so much anymore.
