My Stag had an old tired '78 buick 231 v6 donated at some time. Now it has what is probably rod-knock and is soon to pass away. I am considering upgrading to a newer, more reliable, less drippy engine. I have a TH350 tranny with both GM and chevy mounting. Considering a small block chevy, maybe a 350. I have absolutely no knowledge of what to look for here or what might be involved. I would appreciate any help you guys might have.

Stuart, less drippy-more zippy ? All of those features, and more are present in the "later" Buick V6's. No drips, they dumped the "rope" seals front/back. The supercharged engine will have "lot's" of suds, and the 200R4 auto, is well suited for the set-up.Good Luck, roverman.
Go for the original, wonderful-sounding Triumph V8 if you can get it. They're easily fixed and a good one is perfectly reliable.
Otherwise, use a small all-aluminium V8 (NOT an American iron boat-anchor), like an LS3, or the old Buick/Rover 215 if you can get it. RPI Engineering in Norwich will build you a 'short' or 'long' engine, displacing 3.5, 3.9, 4.6, 5.0, 5.2 or even 5.5 litres, they're pretty damn reliable, and nice and light - but then it would have to be shipped across the Atlantic.
There's been talk of putting BMW or Jaguar V8s (or even the Ford Modular) into Rover P6s (which used the Buick/Rover 215), but I don't know if they'd fit. Mind you, the Triumph has more conventional front suspension, and a fairly wide engine bay.
I know someone in Cali put a Ford 302 pushrod lump into a formerly four-cylinder P6, though.
D&D will do a 215. You don't have to ship then.
Toyota 1-UZ FE do fit. Wouldn't take your trans though. 32 valve quad cam 4.0 EFI (out of a GS 400)
