Title: MGA with Independant Rear Suspension
Post by: 58v8mga on July 09, 2010, 08:11:23 PM
I have seen a kit available through Hoyle Engineering in England for a bolt in IRS for the MGA. Anyone know of anything available in Canada or the US as the shipping expense is huge.
I am also looking for front suspension upgrades and to run disc brakes all round.

New to the group and lots of work ahead. Any input appreciated

Not aware of one, but check with Todd Budde.  He makes a bolt in IRS for the MGB and put a Nissan Twin cam in at least one MGA.  Not sure if he's adapted his IRS for the A or not.  Todd also makes a nice aluminum fuel tank with some extra capacity & can be done for carb or with internal high pressure pump & return line fitting for fuel injection swaps.

I have the Hoyle independent rear suspension in my MGB. I bought it about 8 years ago, and had it air freighted to NY, where I cleared it through customs myself. This saved much money; it was cheaper than ocean shipping, but took 1 day of my time running around to various importing offices. Does Hoyle still offer this shipping option (and are you near an import point)? Or maybe Canada is different...

Thanks for the advice....I will check it out. How does your suspension perform vs the original ?

I am very pleased with the rear suspension. It holds up well to my 302 (about 300 ft lbs torque at the rear wheels), the road holding on bumpy surfaces and the ride are both excellent. Plus, the grip is overall excellent; there is no trailing throttle oversteer, and power oversteer is minimal. Part of what contributes to this is, I think, the negative camber I run in the rear suspension. I had to put negative camber in the front to reduce understeer because the back was gripping so well.

Keep in mind that John Hoyle owns an MGA with his suspernsion and a Honda S2000 engine. You can e-mail John and ask for any suggestions he has concerning the MGA (John always answers e-mails promptly).

If you can find a copy of the June 2010 issue of "MG Enthusiast" you can read a very interesting artcle on john Holye's MGA. Nice car!

When I spoke with Todd Budde (3 years ago) about his IRS, he stated that he uses some Japanese center section that is pretty much bullet proof.  He also seemed to have all of the fitting angles covered.  He is one talented individual and I'm convinced that his product could give Hoyle a run for his money.  Has anyone heard from Todd lately?

The Blackwood Labs IRS is the only true bolt-in unit for the MGB but of course we are still in the late stages of testing and development. The one under the MGB-Roadmaster looks like it is holding up well so far.

Are you forgetting about Todd's IRS's JIM?

No, I'm not. Last time I checked you had to lose the battery boxes to put that one in.

Ah, fair point.  It has an integrated battery box on the IRS with the batter accessible through the original hole & it'd been a while -- I'd forgotten I cut out the MG box.
