Post by: rjbyram on March 30, 2010, 10:19:23 PM
anyone have a line on converting the 4 bolt hubs on a mga with disc breaks to 5 bolt? i have ford 9" rear with 5x4.5 bolt pattern and can't find matching wheels for the front with the 4'. i would like to keep the mg front suspension and disc breaks.  any help  is appreciated.

I don't know if the spindles are the same as MGB. On MGB spindles I'm using 64-66 Mustang hubs with 2000 Dodge Intrepid 11.1 vented rotors and studs,Toyota T100 /4Runner 4 pot calipers on custom mounting brackets. If you want to use stock calipers and solid rotors use 79-83 Toyota pickup rotors.

Bob, I'd say the best way to go would be to convert to MGB spindles and uprights. It's an easy swap on the A and will open the door to a lot of hub and brake combinations both as mentioned by Jim but also others such as used on the Roadmaster project and the kits available from Bill Guzman at Classic Conversions.

thanks for all the info. it got me on the right track. i went with wilwood hubs, vented disc and 4 piston calipers for mustang 2.
i made bushings to increase the od's of the spindles (20 & 30 mm) to the mustang bearing id's. less tha  $700 solved the problem and got me a real nice setup for the front without getting into the stock suspension which works fine. the offset is different but i made that up with the wheel offsets. now on to the rear. going with 4 bar triangle and coil overs and a ford 9" and 11 inch drums.
when i get some spare time i'll start a journal on the build with pics. the idea is to keep the mga "kind of" stock looking. the power is a 3.8 buick grand national motor with a 200 4r. i'll have to flair the fenders a little to get the 10 in. tires under them.
thanks again for the help.

I am looking to do the same except I want to do this on a 72 Triumph TR6.  I currently have the 4 bolt pattern. I am using a Ford 9" in the rear so I would like to match this.  Any idea how some of the other Triumph converters did this?

Art, On the TR6 if you don't mind going to different brakes(slip on rotor) mill off backside and drill 5X4.5. Same circle as your stock 4X4.5. Same hole is used for one lug. Look at this picture of 5 lug drum with 4 lug to see the patterns.
