Cutting Coil Springs

When I bought my TR6 I had a shop fix some deficiencies for the safety inspection and they did a bunch of work on the rear end.  They put in new coil springs and the car looks like it is jacked up in the back.
I am thinking of cutting 1" off these rear coils to get the back end lower.  Is this advisable or should I buy some shorter coils?
I have heard that when you cut coil springs that they get stiffer so if you cut 1" from the uncompressed spring when you put the weight on it do you get the full inch or does it end up being like 3/4"  height reduction?
Thanks for your time and consideration.

I did this on my '68 Camaro. Worked out great. Not sure about TR springs, but MGB springs don't really lend themselves to this so easily.

There are three main types of auto springs & only one is well suited to chop. This site explains it better than I.

Carl thanks for your reply.  TR6 springs have flat tops and bottoms so according to that link you attached cutting these springs is a no no.  I will either get springs from British Parts NorthWest or Richard Good.
I swear that car has an IV tube running from my wallet!!

Byron. Thats a nce line about the IV tube. Do you mind if I use it to get a few laughs myself?

Go ahead and use it I don't have a copywrite on that saying.

They can be cut. It's just not as easy. Cut, then heat & bend the end to make it more flat. Probably an art to it.
